Nesting Bald Eagles
Feburary 10, 2011
Jacks Photography

I have watched and photographed this eagle pair in their nesting rituals in the past. Last year I was able to document their behavior from beginning to end of their yearly nesting cycle. I'm doing it again this year. This pair are just starting to nest ealier this year as of Feb 10th, 2011.

"Junior" was sitting above the nest not realizing that he isn't welcome in the area anymore. This told me that nesting time was near as there has been no eagles near the nest since last July. I didn't see him again after today... so parents must have run him off.

Like last year, they are screaming at the Herons who are also nesting close by. None of the Herons dare to come within 500 yards of the Eagle nest. They fly out the back and to the side of their area.

Here it looks like they're discussing the nest...

Not long afterwards, the female left too. That ended my day there.

I went back out and she was in the nest. She never lefted the 2 hours I was there.
She was keeping a good eye on me too!

It snowed and was cold on this day. Dreary day for photo's, but you can't be picky. It was snowing when I got there and the female was already in the nest.

Look at the size of that stick the male is positioning in the nest!

This will give you an idea just how far I have to shoot. Federal law says you have to be 300 yards away from the nest, so here is my stand. If you look real close you will see the nest at about 11 o'clock

No snow today, all melted, but it was cold at around 22 degrees with some wind. The female returning to the nest with a branch in her talons.

After about 10 minutes she took off north toward Puyallup River.
